The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
has revolutionised marine radio communications.

The GMDSS is specifically designed to automate a ship's radio distress alerting function, and, as a consequence, removes the requirement for manual (ie: human) watchkeeping on distress channels.

We will show you the basic concept of GMDSS, its background and history, equipment requirements - and how it affects not only large commercial vessels, but also recreational craft.

Not only will we also discuss flaws in the current system - and offer some possible solutions - but we will also show you why it was time for a change.

Let's take a tour of the GMDSS, starting with a brief background history...
