Who are we, and what do we do?
Who are we?
Dunstan and Associates are an Australian-based international communications consultancy company, with a focus on the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
We specialise in the design, supply and installation/project management of GMDSS Coast Radio Stations.
Our principal, Mr. Glenn Dunstan, was the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Senior Marine Radio Surveyor for much of the 1990's.
Mr. Dunstan was intimately involved with all aspects of the GMDSS.
This included policy formulation, equipment approval, production of legislation, shipboard equipment survey, audit/technical overview of the Coast Radio Network and operator examinations.
Mr. Dunstan wrote the Australian GMDSS handbook.
GMDSS shore radio stations
Many areas of the world have not yet upgraded their marine radio stations to GMDSS standard.
This is primarily because of the apparent high
cost and complexity associated with GMDSS shore station systems.
GMDSS shore radio stations do not have to be expensive or complex.
Dunstan and Associates can design a cost effective GMDSS coast station to suit your needs – be it a simple VHF station or a complete networked VHF/MF/HF system.
If you are looking to upgrade your existing GMDSS station, we can supply a new Digital Selective Calling (DSC) system and/or new VHF or MF/HF radio systems.
Our systems range from very simple, locally controlled equipment:
To comprehensive, remote controlled networks:
We offer a complete turn-key package: design, supply, project management and IMO-compliant GMDSS operator training.
Please note that we normally do not offer stand alone GMDSS training
courses - our courses are provided as part of a Coast Station
Our systems are reasonably priced, and provide leading edge performance.
More information on GMDSS Coast Station design may be found here.
Man overboard monitoring systems
We also provide systems designed for receiving alerts from man overboard beacons using VHF DSC or AIS.
We can integrate a mapping program with our PC based DSC/AIS receiving system, to provide real time location of persons in the water.
Our projects have included:
Design and project management of a GMDSS Sea Area A1 and A3 Coast Radio Network for the Government of Tonga, funded by the World Bank.
Audit and redesign of the (Australian) Northern Territory's Coast Radio Station, Coast Radio Darwin.
Complete implementation of the GMDSS in Papua New Guinea (PNG) - currently underway. This includes upgrade of the Coast Radio Network to GMDSS A3 and A1 standard, upgrade of the rescue coordination centre and the PNG Maritime College, review/rewrite of marine radio legislation and training of Coast Station staff and marine radio surveyors.
Design and installation of a GMDSS Sea Area A1 and A2 Coast Radio Network for the Government of Taiwan.
Design and installation of a GMDSS Sea Area A1 and A3 Coast Radio Station in the Solomon Islands.
Design and delivery of a GMDSS Sea Area A1 Coast Radio station for South Korea.
Design and installation of a GMDSS Sea Area A1 and A2 Coast Radio Station for the Indonesian Coast Guard at Bangka Island.
Production of Chapter VIII of the Naval Ship code (for Lloyds of London) - this specifies GMDSS requirements for warships.
Design and supply of a GMDSS Sea Area A1 Coast Radio Network for the Thailand Coast Guard.
Design and installation of a GMDSS Sea Area A2 and A3 Coast Station
Upgrade of the Namibian Coast Radio Network to GMDSS Sea Area A1 and
A3 standard. This involved new HF and VHF radio facilities and a new
Concept design of the Mobilarm V100 - a revolutionary man overboard alarm and locating system using VHF DSC.
Design and project management of GMDSS implementation at the Shanghai (China) Coast Radio Station - on behalf of the Australian Government International Aid Agency, AusAID.
Design and project management of the PNG National Health Radio Network. This is one of the largest land mobile radio networks in the world, with more than 1500 HF and VHF stations and a major network HF control station.
Design and project management of the Solomon Islands National Health Radio Network. The network comprises 270 HF and VHF stations and a major network HF control station.
Design and costing of a complete GMDSS Coast Radio Station Development Plan for the Pacific Region - on behalf of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Design and installation of a GMDSS radio system at the Australian Rescue Coordination Centre.
Dunstan and Associates and our partner company TransOceana have also completed GMDSS Coast Radio Station projects in Chile and France.
GMDSS consulting services
Dunstan and Associates offer a unique blend of operational and technical GMDSS knowledge.
We also provide general GMDSS consulting - design, training and audit.
