The GMDSS specialists

Who are we?

Dunstan and Associates are an Australian-based international communications consultancy company, with a focus on the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

We specialise in the design, supply and installation/project management of GMDSS Coast Radio Stations.

Our principal, Mr. Glenn Dunstan, was the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Senior Marine Radio Surveyor for much of the 1990's.

Mr. Dunstan was intimately involved with all aspects of the GMDSS.

This included policy formulation, equipment approval, production of legislation, shipboard equipment survey, audit/technical overview of the Coast Radio Network and operator examinations.

Mr. Dunstan wrote the Australian GMDSS handbook.

GMDSS shore radio stations

Many areas of the world have not yet upgraded their marine radio stations to GMDSS standard.

This is primarily because of the apparent high cost and complexity associated with GMDSS shore station systems.

GMDSS shore radio stations do not have to be expensive or complex.

Dunstan and Associates can design a cost effective GMDSS coast station to suit your needs – be it a simple VHF station or a complete networked VHF/MF/HF system.

If you are looking to upgrade your existing GMDSS station, we can supply a new Digital Selective Calling (DSC) system and/or new VHF or MF/HF radio systems.

Our systems range from very simple, locally controlled equipment:

To comprehensive, remote controlled networks:

We offer a complete turn-key package: design, supply, project management and IMO-compliant GMDSS operator training.

Please note that we normally do not offer stand alone GMDSS training courses - our courses are provided as part of a Coast Station installation.

Our systems are reasonably priced, and provide leading edge performance.

More information on GMDSS Coast Station design may be found here.

Man overboard monitoring systems

We also provide systems designed for receiving alerts from man overboard beacons using VHF DSC or AIS.

We can integrate a mapping program with our PC based DSC/AIS receiving system, to provide real time location of  persons in the water.

Our projects have included:

Design and project management of a GMDSS Sea Area A1 and A3 Coast Radio Network for the Government of Tonga, funded by the World Bank.

Audit and redesign of the (Australian) Northern Territory's Coast Radio Station, Coast Radio Darwin.
