Background
In 1998-9, the Australian Government international aid agency (AusAID) funded a
project to upgrade the Shanghai Coast Radio Station to GMDSS standard.
For various technical reasons, this project was initially
unsuccessful.
In 2002, a decision was made to resolve the problems with the first
phase of the project. Densham and Associates were commissioned to
manage the rectification on behalf of AusAID.
Network design
The equipment supplied under the first project
was replaced with modern, solid state transmitters and new receivers. A
complete new Digital Selective Calling (DSC) system was also installed.
Shanghai Radio now provides GMDSS A3, A2 and A1 services.
Station equipment
Shanghai Radio is a very large
station, with multiple transmitters and two receive sites. It is one
of the few 'serious' marine radio stations still operating. It even still provides morse code services to shipping...
One of the tx halls....you just don't see stations like this anymore

Another tx hall
The transmitters supplied under the original GMDSS project were
Racal Decca 10 kW units. Unfortunately, these had become
difficult to maintain.
Original GMDSS tx'ers
The new GMDSS equipment was supplied by Japan Radio Company (JRC).
